Quaraí Chapel for Organ and Strings
Quaraí Chapel was inspired by a visit to the ruins at Quaraí which are part of the Salinas Pueblo Monument district in Northern New Mexico, outside the town of Mountainair. The church was built by native hands between 1627-1633 and wholly abandoned within 40 years. It stands as a testament to a time in American history when European and Native cultures encountered one another and ultimately failed to cohabitate peacefully and amicably.
Standing within the nave of the church, formally called Nuestra Señora de Purísima Concepción de Quaraí, time seems to stop. An eery quiet falls over the space, yet in the midst of this stilness and silence, a sense of sadness prevails.
